NFL free agent wide receiver Michael Thomas could sign with a team this offseason to finally revive his career. The wideout market hasn’t been the best as everyone was anticipating, as many weapons like Amari Cooper and Elijah Moore are on the market. The NFL Draft is still weeks away, so several free agents will have to wait patiently if teams will take a chance on them, especially for Thomas, who did end up signing with a new roster last year in a surprise. Originally selected in the second round of the 20216 NFL Draft, the former Ohio State product became one of the league’s top wide receivers, recording more than 1,100-yards in his rookie season.
Thomas became explosive the following three seasons while notching three consecutive Pro Bowls, exceeding 1,200 yards per year. He was looking like one of the brightest stars in the league, but injuries were creeping up on him as the wide receiver hasn’t been able to stay on the field for the entirety of the 2020-2022 campaigns. Thomas may have returned to the field in 2023, but he wasn’t the same receiver that most remember. Despite the locker room antics, the wide receiver could have something in the tank to give to several teams still looking for a capable answer in their depth chart.
Thomas won’t start for a new team unless they’re desperate, but these three rosters will likely take a shot on him and see how he could play at age 32.
What Happened To NFL Free Agent Michael Thomas? Chiefs, Chargers and Cowboys Possible Suitors
Helping Patrick Mahomes
The Kansas City Chiefs are in the worst spot if someone thinks more into it when it comes to their pass-catching unit. Last season, quarterback Patrick Mahomes had one of his worst seasons last year, to his standards, so the team needs a fresh wide receiver who can stay consistent on their roster. The Chiefs kept getting away with close wins, so many should be no strangers to why they finally got exposed in the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles. While it could have been a slow start, the Chiefs will need a playmaker in the slot if they lose another weapon to an injury or suspension.
Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice can’t seem to stay out of trouble, but if they do, the Chiefs should be in good business. However, if it’s the other way around, the team should take a chance on Thomas. He isn’t going to change the entire pass game, but he’s a nostalgia piece that head coach Any Reid should take advantage. Marquise Brown is returning, but who knows if it will be his final season with them?
Other Fits
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers have one of the worst wide receiver groups in football. Even though the team signed Mike Williams, he isn’t the same elite player that everyone remembers. Ladd McConkey is the clear answer for Justin Herbert’s pass game. Michael Thomas won’t be a long-term fix, but he’s an immediate answer while the Chargers find another McConkey in this year’s draft.
On the other side, the Dallas Cowboys are looking to add a wide receiver immediately. After losing Brandin Cooks, the only capable weapon is CeeDee Lamb. Thomas could start in this system since Jerry Jones loves to give washed-up players a second chance.
