Not even former New Orleans Saints players could catch a break on Sunday. Longtime Saints punter Thomas Morstead left the position in good hands when the Saints released him last summer, having trained his replacement Blake Gillikin for the job, and he’s since gone on to kick for a few different teams. These days he’s punting for the Miami Dolphins, and he ended up in, well, a tight spot in their Week 3 game with the Buffalo Bills.
After the Miami defense held strong and forced a Buffalo turnover on downs at the Dolphins 5-yard line, Morstead trotted out to try a punt from his own end zone late in regulation. But the ball left his foot and struck his punt protector Trent Sherfield in, well, his behind and fell out of bounds for a safety. It was kind of embarrassing, but also a bright moment of levity — helped by Morstead booting the subsequent free kick all the way to the Buffalo 23, allowing his teammates on defense to win the day in the game’s final seconds. Miami improved to 3-0 and everyone enjoyed a laugh about it after the game.
