In 2020, Tom Brady left the New England Patriots to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to ESPN insider Jeff Darlington, the legendary quarterback was awfully close to signing with a different NFC South team.
During an appearance on 560 Sports’ “The Joe Rose Show with Zach Krantz,” Darlington said Brady was very close to joining the New Orleans Saints.
“Do I believe that Tom Brady will eventually have a role within the Dolphins organization? I sort of do,” Darlington said, via Audacy. “But does that mean – were Sean and Tom thinking and considering the possibility of doing something where he’s playing and Sean is coaching? Yeah, sure. Things get talked about in this industry all the time, and it is fun to play revisionist history. But guess what? Tom Brady was so close to joining the Saints.”
The Saints ultimately kept Drew Brees for another season.
“If Drew Brees had decided not to come back for that final year and say, for instance, go to the Monday Night Football booth instead of coming back for another season, Tom Brady would’ve played for the Saints. And Sean Payton would probably still be there. And we could talk about that ad nauseam too, but it didn’t happen,” Darlington added.

Brady most likely would’ve had success alongside Sean Payton in New Orleans. That being said, he’s doing just fine in Tampa Bay.
Since joining the Buccaneers in 2020, Brady has 9,949 passing yards and 83 touchdown passes. Let’s also not forget that he added yet another Super Bowl ring to his collection.
