Orlovsky recently announced he’d be stepping away from the television scene for a while.
With the Super Bowl over, the New Orleans Saints can now resume talks with Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Coordinator and Super Bowl Champion, Kellen Moore. The Saints have narrowed their search and plan to hire Moore as their next head coach, which means he’ll need to assemble a new staff in New Orleans.
One of the positions that will need filling is quarterback’s coach. It seems likely that current Eagles QB Coach, Doug Nussmeier, will fill the Saints vacant offensive coordinator role (not a guarantee), so Moore will likely have to look for a new QB coach.
An interesting name that could be thrown into the mix is Dan Orlovsky. The former NFL QB and ESPN Analyst announced he would be stepping away from the television scene for “a long time” after the Super Bowl and could look to get into the coaching scene. There are no official rumors on this, it’s all just speculation on my part, but if he were to look for a coaching job, New Orleans could be a potential landing spot.
“I’m taking a break, won’t be on TV for a long time” said Orlovsky on air Monday morning. “Never know what the future holds but I’m taking a break, just want to say thank you. Appreciate you guys so much.”
Orlovsky then went on social media and said he has a “lotta decisions to make,” regarding his future.
Moore and Orlovsky have crossed paths a few times over the years with Moore as a coach and Orlovsky as an analyst, but their most significant time together came as teammates in 2014 when both QBs played for the Lions backing up Matthew Stafford. Since then, their careers have gone different ways, but the two are still friends.
Orlovksy has no prior coaching experience, and I know people love to make fun of him for running out the back of the end zone during his playing career, but if you’ve listened to him talk, you know that this guy knows football, and more specifically the quarterback position.
One of my favorite segments he’s done over the past few months is when he uses virtual reality to run through plays and give fans a first-person perspective of what the quarterback is seeing on a specific play. Just watch his analysis here and you’ll see what I mean.

Moore’s coaching staff is going to be filled with guys he knows, trusts and thinks will help them get the Saints back on track, and the QB coach position will be one of the most important roles he has to fill. It seems like Derek Carr’s days with the Saints may be numbered and they have Spencer Rattler in the building along with the draft capital to draft one of the top quarterbacks this year if they so choose, so getting the QB coach right will be crucial this year. Whoever it ends up being will be in charge of developing the Saints next franchise quarterback, whoever they decide that is.
Is Dan Orlovsky the safest bet for the job? No, but neither is Kellen Moore. Again, this is all complete speculation, but if he’s interested and Moore were to bring him in, I think it would excite the fanbase and the quarterbacks in the room. Orlovsky not only has a playing history and knowledge of the position, but he seems to be charismatic guy and someone the players could relate to and get behind.
