Three days after the Seattle Seahawks fired offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb after just one season, the team has now inquired about a familiar face within the New Orleans Saints organization.
Seattle has requested to interview Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak to potentially fill the void left by Grubb. After a 10-win season left the Seahawks just barely missing the playoffs, many wouldn’t expect such a move by the organization. Head coach Mike McDonald spoke about the decision behind the firing of Grubb, stating that he felt the offense was going in a different direction than what he had envisioned for his team.
The interest in Kubiak might indicate McDonald’s preferred philosophy being more of a zone-heavy blocking scheme with the play-action passing game built off of that. As far as where Kubiak stands with the Saints, the decision to move on from him will likely be determined by the next head coach’s preference.
It is more likely than not that if the team goes in the offensive direction at the top position, Kubiak will not longer be on the staff. A defensive-minded coach however, may believe in what he saw over the course of the season minus the plethora of injuries that the team endured down the stretch. The Saints have previously indicated they would let assistants pursue lateral moves on a case-by-case basis.
Nevertheless, Kubiak now has a potential option out West. If he ends up with this gig he would be calling plays against his brother and former teammate Klay Kubiak, who was promoted to San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator under Kyle Shanahan.
