GM Mickey Loomis shared the information during his pre-draft press conference.
New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis stated during his annual pre-draft press conference with the local media that the team would pick up wide receiver Chris Olave’s fifth-year option but not right tackle Trevor Penning’s.
Olave’s option being picked up is expected. Despite facing some injuries in his young career, he has 191 receptions for 2,565 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns through three seasons. He’s also been the de facto WR#1 ever since Michael Thomas left the team in 2023.
Overthecap projects the option to be worth around $15,493,000.
Additionally, many anticipated that the Saints would not pick Trevor Penning. This could be due to several reasons, like confidence issues, concerns that he might not be up to the NFL standard, and the switching from left tackle to right. However, Mickey Loomis said he has confidence in the young offensive lineman.
“That doesn’t mean we don’t love Trevor and expect him to be part of the team going forward.” Loomis said.
That makes the 2025 season the most important of Penning’s career and due to the upcoming NFL draft, a potential future replacement for him could be in the building by May.
