Things will be ramping up this week as the New Orleans Saints continue their search for both an offensive and defensive coordinator under first-year head coach Kellen Moore.
Two candidates that quickly came to mind that would fill these roles were Philadelphia Eagles QB coach Doug Nussmeier and former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley. After much speculation over the past couple of weeks, the two will officially be interviewing for those respective roles sometime this week, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Nussmeier, who is the father of LSU starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, has been tied to Moore since 2018 where they began coaching together with the Dallas Cowboys. Nussmeier would travel to Los Angeles and Philly with Moore, showing his tremendous value to he and his offense. Nussmeier also spent time as a player for the Saints, who selected him in the fourth round in the 1994 NFL draft.
Staley, former Chargers head coach spent this past season as assistant head coach for the 49ers where he aided in overseeing things on the defensive side of the ball. Staley received his opportunity as head coach for the L.A. Chargers from 2021-2023 where he would cross paths with Moore as the OC for his team in his final season. Staley’s biggest feat came in 2020 where he led the Los Angeles Rams defense to a No. 1 ranking in both points and yards allowed.
The team’s interest in these two individuals comes to no surprise with direct ties to Kellen Moore. These two will likely remain as the front runners for these jobs until this thing officially comes to a close.
