Mathieu’s new agreement will keep him in New Orleans for the 2025 season at a lower cap hit and with incentives, he can make up to $7.2 million.
In 2024, the veteran safety recorded 3 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles for the Saints in all 17 games. Mathieu’s consistency and availability have made him a top safety in the league, but as the team looks to do a soft rebuild, there was potential for the parties to part ways.
There were some rumors that Mathieu could be a cut candidate for the Saints before free agency due to the team’s cap situation and his age. Mathieu responded to the situation with a tweet claiming it was a “slow business day.” The New Orleans native is a fan favorite due to his ties to the city and took a pay cut to help his childhood team a chance to sign more free agents and a chance to compete in a weak NFC South.
