The New Orleans Saints‘ quarterback room became pretty crowded this offseason. With no need for three veteran quarterbacks on the roster, the organization released one on Tuesday morning.
The Saints have released veteran quarterback Blake Bortles. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he asked to be released after the team signed Andy Dalton to be Jameis Winston’s backup.
Bortles would like an opportunity to be a true No. 2 option somewhere. He should receive plenty of interest before the 2022 season.
The Saints, meanwhile, are moving forward with Winston and Dalton.
Blake Bortles asked for and will receive his release from the Saints today after their signing of Andy Dalton, per league source. At the age of 29, with 73 starts and 103 TD passes on his resume, Bortles is looking for a better opportunity to be a No. 2 quarterback elsewhere.

Bortles has 73 starts and 103 touchdowns passes to his name. He should have no problem finding a new home.
The Saints, in the meantime, are moving forward with Winston and Dalton. They’re in a good position quarterback-wise. If Winston performs poorly or gets hurt Dalton can fill in right away. It’d probably be a smooth transition, too.
With that being said Dalton is fully committed to being the best backup he can be to Winston.
“This Is Jameis’ thing,” Dalton said, via Pro Football Talk. “I’m here to help him out in any way that I can. I’m excited to work with him, be in the same room, and see everything I can do to help him out to make him the best player he can be.”
