The 23-year-old UDFA spent his rookie season on the Saints practice squad while second-year kicker Blake Grupe retained the starting job for his sophomore campaign. Grupe finished the 2024 season going 31-of-33 on extra points and 27-of-31 on field goal attempts (7 of 8 from 40-49 and 6 of 8 from 50-59), which earned him a 76.1 overall grade from Pro Football Focus. This marked a slight improvement from his rookie season, when he went 40-of-40 on extra points but 30-of-37 on field goal attempts (8 of 10 from 40-49 and 6 of 9 from 50-59), earning a 60.8 overall grade.
Smyth’s leg strength is undeniable. The decision to stick with Grupe this season was based solely on the uncertainty surrounding Smyth’s consistency from short and intermediate ranges—the distances the Saints believed they’d be kicking from most often. Clearly, New Orleans is pleased with Smyth’s progress and appears ready to embrace a third consecutive kicking competition.
