New Orleans’ #1 candidate is now off the board.
The New Orleans Saints went into this week with the idea of starting in-person interviews and getting one step closer to hiring their next head coach. With the blizzard hitting Louisiana, meetings were delayed, and one candidate was the biggest name to watch. Aaron Glenn was set to meet with the New York Jets Tuesday, and if that meeting did not go to plan or if Glenn wanted to assess his options, the Saints were set to meet with him. Throughout this week, there was a feeling that it was inevitable Glenn would become the next head coach of the Jets, and today, according to Adam Schefter, it is now official.

It cannot be understated how much of a hit this is to the Saints. Glenn seemed to be the favorite going into this coaching search, and it felt like New Orleans had the momentum to make it happen. Glenn’s ties to the Jets were just too strong for him to coach another team, and now, the Saints will need to pivot. At this moment, Mike Kafka and Anthony Weaver are expected to come in for in-person interviews this week. Their original meetings were delayed because of the winter storm. Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is also expected to interview with the Saints some point this week, but it is still unknown when. The last name that is reportedly expected have an in-person interview with the Saints is Joe Brady. The Buffalo Bills are currently in the playoffs, so the Saints need to wait until after this weekend to schedule another interview with Brady.
Looking at the new front runners for this head coaching position, Mike McCarthy and Joe Brady should be the top choices. Both candidates have upside and downside. McCarthy is a safe pick who has been a winner for most of his coaching career and could bring this team to the playoffs. The issue is McCarthy has not had success when getting to the playoffs in recent years and he will not lead this team into a “rebuild”. With Joe Brady, he is a high-risk high reward candidate. At 35 years old, Brady is a young offensive minded coach that can bring fresh life into this roster and help rebuild. His potential is through the roof, but his leadership as a head coach is the main question.
