One of the top prospects could drop to 9.
The New Orleans Saints are going into the 2025 offseason with uncertainty at quarterback. Derek Carr may be a cut candidate but could stay for another season if Kellen Moore believes in him. Spencer Rattler is a great young option that the organization seems to love, but it is unknown how Moore feels about him, so if those two options are not the final decision, the NFL Draft will probably be where the Saints will find their future starting QB.
Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders have been the top 2 quarterback prospects for much of the process, but there are still some worries about these two young QBs. Many teams that need a starting QB in 2025 who are drafting in the top 10 may go with veteran options instead of taking a risk on one of these prospects, which may cause a slip for either/both of Ward and Sanders.
In an exclusive interview with DJ Siddiqi at RG, Saints legend Drew Brees discussed the possibility of a top QB dropping in this year’s NFL Draft:
“You’re always, you’re always thinking wherever you’re drafting, No. 1, what are the needs? But number two, who is the best player available? Inevitably, you see in every draft where all of a sudden, a guy drops further than you expect.”
This idea of a top quarterback prospect dropping has become increasingly likely due to the rumors that the New York Giants are possibly trading for Matthew Stafford, and the Tennessee Titans are looking to trade out of the first pick. Brees highlights that these quarterback prospects may not be the best available players and could fall if teams focus on another roster needs first. This could happen with Ward or Sanders. If the Saints and Kellen Moore believe in one of these quarterback prospects, passing them up at pick nine will be difficult. Brees mentioned this thought process and how it was very present in 2017:
“When you have your opportunity to get who you might perceive as your guy, then you got to take him, right? Sean Payton loved Patrick Mahomes back in 2017 when he was coming out,” said Brees. “I think had Mahomes dropped to No. 11, I think Sean Payton would have taken him.”
Obviously, in 2017, the Saints were in a much better position, and Mahomes would have been a spectacular selection, but this idea of getting the “guy” is very relevant in this year’s draft. Kellen Moore will be heavily involved with assessing each of the prospects, and if one of these QBs makes a fantastic impression, using pick nine on said prospect could become the likely option. This could be Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, or even someone surprising, but if Kellen Moore wants that prospect, the New Orleans Saints need to get him.
