The New Orleans Saints continue to fill out Kellen Moore’s staff with intriguing assistants. The latest, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, is Ted Rath as the director of sports science.
Rath has held a number of roles in the NFL, mostly as a trainer and on the strength and conditioning staff. That’s where he overlapped with head coach Kellen Moore on the Detroit Lions for a few years; Moore was a backup quarterback at the time while Rath worked as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. He was out of football in 2024, but was most recently the Philadelphia Eagles director of sports performance from 2020 to 2023.
The 41-year-old is most famously known in the football world as the original “get-back” coach responsible for keeping Sean McVay on the sideline from his time with the Los Angeles Rams. He would follow McVay on the sidelines and make sure he doesn’t step out onto the field and get a penalty.
As the director of sports performance, he will be in charge of the overall scientific approach that the team’s coaches and trainers implement. The Eagles have enjoyed rare good health among the NFL’s teams in recent years while the Saints have been one of the squads hardest hit by injuries. Maybe Rath can help out.
