New Orleans releases the veteran running back after two disappointing seasons.
The New Orleans Saints are releasing veteran running back Jamaal Williams, per Ari Meirov. Williams has spent two seasons in New Orleans. Williams’ release will save the Saints $1.59 million in cap space.

Williams signed a three-year $12 million contract with the Saints in March 2023. The veteran running back was never able to find his footing in New Orleans, however, running for just 470 yards and two touchdowns in his two seasons. Williams signed with the Saints after career year with the Detroit Lions, in which he ran for 1,066 yards and 17 touchdowns.
New Orleans’ offense will likely shift to a run-heavy scheme after signing head coach Kellen Moore, the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles last season who helped running back Saquon Barkley rush for 2,005 yards in 2024.
The move will allow the Saints to add a younger back through the 2025 NFL Draft, which features various talented running backs down the chart. The running back room in New Orleans now consists of Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller, Jordan Mims, and recently re-signed Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
