The 2024 NFL regular season is coming to a close, and for another year the New Orleans Saints will be watching the playoffs from home just like many of their fans. But this offseason is going to be different. The Saints must hire a new head coach after team owner Gayle Benson overruled general manager Mickey Loomis and fired Dennis Allen at midseason. Interim head coach Darren Rizzi hasn’t done enough to win the job. They’ll be busy on Airline Drive.
So we’re taking a quick look at 2025. Leaguewide standings are nearly set, though not in the NFC South, which means all but three of the Saints’ opponents next year are already confirmed. And we know the options in play for those last few slots.
Depending on Week 18’s results, the Saints could move down from third in the NFC South standings to fourth if they lose to the Buccaneers while the Carolina Panthers upset the Atlanta Falcons. That would be the difference in hosting the 7-9 Dallas Cowboys next year or the 3-13 New York Giants, as well as visiting the 11-5 Green Bay Packers or 4-12 Chicago Bears; we’re not as worried about getting the 4-12 Jacksonville Jaguars or 3-13 Tennessee Titans, but maybe we should be. This Saints team hasn’t taken advantage of multiple slates ranked among the easiest schedules in recent years.
