With the news on Kellen Moore becoming the next head coach of the New Orleans Saints, there’s been much speculation on who Moore will bring in to fill his staff. Many of the coaches that have come up in these discussions are guys that Moore is familiar either being apart of the Philadelphia Eagles staff this past season or from his ties in L.A. (with both the Rams and Chargers) and the Dallas Cowboys.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was asked recently about Moore possibly bringing in coaches from his Eagles staff, but Sirianni made it clear that his staff would remain intact if not for a promotion. No lateral moves here: “I don’t let that happen, usually. But sometimes you can’t help it.”
He also added that there’s great difficulty building a staff and keeping continuity within: “Just like Frank (Reich) said to me, ‘this is my staff, and you can’t have these guys.’ It’s hard to build the staff and have that continuity in there, but there’s sometimes you can’t… Every situation is a little different. But my general thought on that is, this is my and the Philadelphia Eagles’ staff.”
Coaches such as Doug Nussmeier (the Eagles quarterbacks coach who worked with Moore in Dallas and Los Angeles) is among candidates to follow Moore to New Orleans. After reading Sirianni’s comments, it’s clear that Moore would likely have to bring Nussmeier in to be his offensive coordinator if he did in fact want to bring him to New Orleans. This could certainly be the case as Nussmeier has been an integral piece to Moore and his offenses since their time together. We should hear a lot more on that front in the next couple days as Kellen Moore gets settled into his new home.
