The New Orleans Saints organization has struggled to find stability since quarterback Drew Brees retired. The team is looking for their future head coach this offseason, and there are reports that the Saints are bringing in this particular coach for a second interview.
New Orleans Saints Interview This Coach a Second Time
The New Orleans Saints are set to interview Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady for a second time for their head coaching position. Brady is a well-respected offensive mind around the NFL. Brady got his coaching start with the Saints in 2017 when Sean Payton hired him as an offensive assistant. From there, Brady worked his way up the coaching ranks, ultimately securing the Bills offensive coordinator position.
Brady’s LSU success
Joe Brady has had offensive success in many different situations. Brady was the passing game coordinator on the 2019-2020 National Champion LSU team. LSU had one of the most explosive offenses ever, and quarterback Joe Burrow had one of the best seasons of all time. The team gained over 8,000 total yards on the season, and over 6,000 of them were through the air, which was Brady’s coaching department.
Joe Burrow threw for 5,671 passing yards, 60 touchdowns, and just 6 interceptions with a whopping completion percentage of 76.3. Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase each had at least 1,500 yards receiving and 80 receptions. LSU was undefeated in their quest for a national championship. This level of success could peak the Saints’ interest as they look for their next coach. Due to the success of their offense, more specifically the passing game, NFL coaching opportunities opened up for Joe Brady.
NFL journey
Joe Brady had a short stint with the Carolina Panthers as their offensive coordinator. The Panthers were a disaster all around, and Brady was fired after a year and a half. After this stint, Brady was hired by the Buffalo Bills as their quarterbacks coach. Buffalo has been a much more successful stint for Brady.
Buffalo Bills
After a season as quarterbacks coach, Brady was promoted to offensive coordinator. Brady’s offense with the Bills has focused much more on running the ball. Before Brady, Ken Dorsey’s offense relied heavily on Josh Allen’s arm. While Allen is an all-world talent at quarterback, he was carrying too much of the load. Enter Brady, who wanted to utilize his running backs, specifically James Cook much more.
The Bills’ offense ranked 10th in total yards this season, averaging 359.1 per game. However, Buffalo’s offense was second in points per game on the year. The team averaged 30.9 points per game. The offense saw a real resurgence with Brady calling the plays and a much more concentrated focus on the running game.
Potential impact in New Orleans
The Saints are looking for a new leader in their locker room. Brady can be that leader as the Saints coach and also help revamp a struggling offense. The Derek Carr era at quarterback has not gone according to plan so far, and the Saints will likely need a new quarterback in the next few years. Brady has worked with two elite quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Josh Allen. He could be the right guy to oversee the development of the Saints, next quarterback.
