A recap of the new coaching staff for first year head coach Kellen Moore.
The New Orleans Saints have undergone a lot of changes in recent weeks after bringing in head coach Kellen Moore on February 10.
Since then, the former offensive coordinator has been assembling his staff, finding a good mix of people he’s worked with and people who would bring a ton of benefit to his team.
First, let’s look at the coaches he brought with him from the Philadelphia Eagles:
Moore brought in Doug Nussmeier, who played quarterback for the Saints in the 90s and his son is currently heading into his senior season at LSU. Ted Rath is also coming to New Orleans as the director of sports science. You may remember him as Sean McVay’s get-back guy several years ago. Moore also brought TJ Paganetti to the Crescent CIty with him as an offensive assistant, which is one move that has been viewed as an underrated one.
Now, there are coaches who have experience with New Orleans.
Joel Thomas may be the biggest addition of this cycle as the running backs coach returns to the Big Easy after one year away with the New York Giants. Thomas coached running backs in New Orleans from 2015-2023 and has helped develop Alvin Kamara into one of the top backs in the NFL.
Lastly, Brandon Staley was hired over the weekend to run Moore’s defense. Most recently, Staley was an associate head coach with the San Francisco 49ers. Prior to that, he spent three seasons as a head coach for the Los Angeles Chargers. Moore was his offensive coordinator in 2023.
On Monday, it was announced that Terry Joseph would be leaving the University of Texas to be the Saints’ defensive backs coach. He brings a wealth of college experience as leading one of the top secondaries in the country in 2024.
Phil Galiano will stay with the Saints as special teams coordinator and Kyle Wilbur was hired as his assistant.
