Looks like Kellen Moore’s former QB coach will follow him to New Orleans.
The New Orleans Saints have found their new head coach in Kellen Moore and have now shifted their focus to filling out the rest of their staff. They’ve already made a couple of hires, but one of their biggest job openings, offensive coordinator, is still open. However, it does seem the Saints have their eyes on someone.
As of Tuesday morning, former Philadelphia Eagles QB Coach, Doug Nussmeier, is still the favorite to land the Saints offensive coordinator job according to a report by Nick Underhill.
Sounds like Doug Nussmeier is the favorite to be the Saints offensive coordinator, I’m told. Not done yet, but things are moving in that direction.

Nussmeier has been an obvious candidate for this spot ever since reports started swirling that Kellen Moore was expected to take the Saints job after the Super Bowl. They’ve interviewed a few other coaches such as Jemal Singleton (Eagles RB coach) and Robert Prince (Dolphins WR coach) as well, but Nussmeier has been at the top of their list since the start. Kevin Koger, the Falcons TE coach, was another name they wanted to interview, but he turned them down.
Nussmeier has a long coaching history which dates back to 2003, when he was hired as Michigan State’s QB coach. Since then, he’s climbed the college ranks and eventually became the offensive coordinator at Michigan before heading to the Dallas Cowboys for his first NFL job, where he became their TE coach. He was later promoted to QB coach when Mike McCarthy was hired.
It was in Dallas where Nussmeier and Moore first met. Moore was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2019 after a year as QB coach and was then retained by McCarthy. He would serve four seasons as Dallas’ offensive coordinator with Nussmeier as his QB coach before he and the Cowboys parted ways after their playoff loss in 2023.
Moore was then hired as the Chargers offensive coordinator and brought Nussmeier with him as QB coach. After one season in LA, Moore moved to Philly, and I think you can guess who came with him.
Needless to say, Moore and Nussmeier are very familiar with each other and know how to work well together. Perhaps more importantly, they both now how to work with quarterbacks and how to maximize their potential. The Saints may not have their QB of the future in the building, but I think it’s safe to say they’re going to try to find one within the next year and a half.
An interesting thing to note in relation to the Saints quarterback situation is that Nussmeier’s son, Garrett, plays for LSU and will be one of the top quarterback prospects in 2026. Depending on how next season goes for the Saints, they could be well within striking distance of drafting Garrett, which is something that I think would peak a lot of Louisiana sports fans interests.
With Moore calling plays, the most important thing was finding an offensive coordinator he can trust, and that’s exactly what Nussmeier is. It’s a bit surprising that nobody took a chance on him as an offensive coordinator earlier in his NFL career, but the Saints won’t complain about that.
