Trey Murphy on Draymond Green calling the NBA ‘boring’: I don’t agree with that. I think the game’s fun. I still have fun watching basketball; I have fun playing basketball. The trade deadline made ratings go up a lot, so people are more intrigued and tuned in. The last two weeks before All-Star might be a little boring—everybody’s just trying to make All-Star—but the NBA being boring in general? I don’t know about that for sure.’

When Draymond Green predicted another Warriors title on Sunday night, he wasn’t putting on a show for the All-Star cameras. He was repeating the same bold, pro-Jimmy Butler message he’d been sharing behind the scenes all weekend.

Charles Barkley is 100% right about Draymond Green’s comments: His generation messed the game up. That’s why the NBA has to try so much stuff to make All-Star Sunday entertaining again. – 9:26 PM

The worst part of the All-Star Game changes isn’t the inclusion of the Rising Stars or the first-to-40 rule or the tournament (and Draymond makes valid points). It’s that there’s somehow less basketball than ever. Commercials and shootouts for charity? Where is the actual game?! – 9:16 PM

More on this storyline
Truth be told, it took me a moment to figure out how to respond to what, at first glance, sounded like delusion. After all, the Vegas oddsmakers currently have 10 teams above the Warriors in their title-team odds (Golden State is a +5000 on BetMGM). So I asked, somewhat delicately, if his prediction was intended to be applied to this current season. The Warriors are 28-27 overall, tied with the Sacramento Kings for ninth in the Western Conference, and miles behind teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Oklahoma City Thunder and the defending champion Boston Celtics, all of whom have proved to be quite formidable. “Yes,” he replied. “Absolutely.” -via New York Times / February 17, 2025
Draymond Green is standing in a hallway of the Hilton hotel in Union Square, talking shop with Warriors team president Brandon Schneider and me during the league’s annual Technology Summit when the topic of Butler and what he brings comes up. “We’re going to win the championship,” Green said, his head bobbing with that same energy he would show two days later. -via New York Times / February 17, 2025
Kevin Durant: “I think Draymond would be a better head coach than he would be a TV analyst” -via reddit / February 17, 2025
Trey Murphy: ‘Toumani Camara. He is an elite defender and I don’t think people really know or have like paid too much attention like how good he is on defense. And a lot of times what you’ll see is like guys that are tall, lanky or taller defenders, they give up strength or they give up agility, like not a lot of them have all the tools. He has agility, he has strength, he’s smart defensively. I’ll put him on there as one of my underappreciated guys. -via YouTube / February 18, 2025
Trey Murphy on Brandon Ingram: He actually even stayed the next day, right before we left for the bus to go to the airport. He was in the lobby, saying bye to everybody. And I mean, that just shows how he is. He makes sure he says bye to everybody in the organization because he’s just been a stand-up guy the entire time. So, you know, it was a little sad for sure, but obviously, it’s probably a better situation for him. And he gets his money like he wanted. You know, I’m just super happy for him because there’s not a guy that deserves it more than he does. -via YouTube / February 12, 2025
Active NBA players curious about a future as a broadcaster often don’t explore that path until deep into their playing career, perhaps after they turn 30 and retirement starts to approach. Then there’s New Orleans forward Trey Murphy, 24. After only two pro seasons, Murphy was a host on ESPN’s 2023 NBA Draft coverage, sitting alongside Brian Windhorst during a three-hour livestream. Early in the 2023-24 season, while recovering from knee surgery, Murphy decided to provide “live analysis” of a Pelicans scrimmage in the Metairie practice facility, describing the action in entertaining fashion to (actual) Pelicans TV analyst Antonio Daniels. “Trey is hilarious,” Daniels remembered of Murphy’s running commentary. “Obviously he was saying certain things that you can’t say on TV. But it was awesome. He was breaking down what was going on in the scrimmage, saying things like, ‘Man, that was a messed-up shot!’ knowing he’s part of the team, so he can say things (about teammates) that we can’t say on TV. It was really funny.” -via NBA.com / January 21, 2025
