Yossi Gozlan: “This max contract he signed in 2022 has been mostly non-guaranteed. The first year, I believe, was guaranteed last year. This season is only 50% guaranteed, so they can actually cut him right now within the week before all salaries get guaranteed, and they’d only owe him half of his $36 million salary. I highly doubt they do that, especially because all the future years are non-guaranteed. So the way this contract is structured in subsequent seasons is it has these guarantee triggers—mainly for weight and then games played. It looks like he’s not on track to hit any of those, so his salary is most likely going to be non-guaranteed for next season. But you only get the savings if you cut him. The big difference between this year and next season is that he has a July 15th guarantee date, and that applies to all the other subsequent seasons. So if he’s still on the Pelicans—or whichever team has him—they have to decide what to do with him by July 15th.”
