Daniel Theis has never averaged double-digit points in an NBA season, topping out at 9.6 ppg in 2020-21, but New Orleans has plenty of bona fide bucket-getters. The 6-foot-8 center isn’t likely to end up starring on many highlight reels this season, but the Pelicans have the likes of Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram and Dejounte Murray for that. Sure, Theis may not boast a flashy game or be a feared offensive weapon, but the native of Germany eagerly embraces exactly what he brings to the Crescent City roster, after signing as a free agent in July. “I don’t need the basketball in my hands a lot,” Theis said. “I can set screens, run the court, space (the floor). We have a lot of guys who are great at pick-and-rolls. (I want to) get them open with ball screens, off-ball screens. Do the dirty work.”
