Much better
Sorry for the delayed recap, y’all. The wife and I were out and about at the Orion parade last night. While we were doing that, the LSU baseball team (6-1) finally flexed its muscles against a pesky Omaha team (2-5) 12-1 to split the Saturday doubleheader and win the series.
Jared Jones had his best game of the young 2025 season with 5 RBI, while Chase Shores improved to 2-0 thanks to a five inning outing in which he allowed three hits, a pair of walks, and struck out six.
“Chase is excellent, he’s one of the best pitchers in the country,” Jay Johnson said. “He’s pitching with great confidence and great tempo, and he’s throwing all of his pitches for strikes. I thought he was good last weekend, and I thought he was better this weekend.”
Zac Cowan took the mound in relief of Shores and pitched a perfect sixth and seventh inning. Cowan struck out three of the six batters he faced.
Jacob Mayers pitched the eighth and ran into a little bit of trouble. He allowed the only Omaha run of the night and while he didn’t give up a hit, he issued his first two walks of the season. Remember, walks was the big bugaboo about Mayers last season at Nicholls and he led the country last year with 76 in 70.2 innings. It’s a small sample size, obviously, but Mayers has two walks in two innings pitched so that’s something to keep an eye on as the season progresses.
DJ Primeaux and Jaden Noot combined to close out the game in the ninth inning. Primeaux retired the one and only batter he faced, while Noot was perfect in sitting down the two batters he faced.
After being frustrated for eight innings in the first game of the doubleheader, the LSU offense got going much earlier in the nightcap. LSU pushed a run across in the second and third inning, and then erupted for three runs in the fourth; the Tigers would plate three more in the sixth and capped off the evening with four runs in the seventh.
Tanner Reaves got the start at third base and also batted leadoff. He drew a pair of walks, was credited with an RBI, and scored two runs. Fellow freshman Derek Curiel continues to impress and reached base three times (two hits and a walk). Curiel was also aggressive on the base path and scored all the way from first on an infield single by known speedster Bear Jones.

Jones also picked up a pair of RBI doubles, one in the sixth and the other in the seventh inning. Jones went 3-5 at the plate and more RBI last night, five, than he had coming into Saturday night’s game, four.
This upcoming week will be a big one for the LSU baseball team. The Tigers will host Nicholls* Monday night, before heading to Texas for four games. On Wednesday LSU will play Dallas Baptist at Globe Life Field in Arlington, and then the Tigers will spend this weekend partaking in the Frisco College Baseball Classic. LSU will play Kansas State on Friday, Nebraska on Saturday, and Sam Houston State on Sunday.
Note the Nicholls game on Monday is NOT the makeup for last week’s game that was postponed. This game was previously scheduled for April 8 and moved up. The make up day for the away game at Nicholls now occupies that April 8 date.
Unfortunately it doesn’t appear as though any of these four games in Texas will be streamable through ESPN. You’ll have to watch the DBU game via FloSports, and the only way to watch the games in Frisco will be through D1 Baseball, which requires a subscription.
