When it comes to tailgating, LSU has always been in a league of its own. Our pre-game festivities are just as legendary as the players we pack Death Valley to cheer for- but there are rules. To help you navigate the holy art of LSU tailgating, we’ve put together the LSU Tailgate Ten Commandments. Follow these sacred rules, and you’ll be tailgating like a true Tiger in no time!
1. Thou Shalt Not Wear Spots
This shouldn’t be a hard one, but every year I see more and more of you breaking this one, so it gets top billing. WE ARE TIGERS. TIGERS ARE STRIPED. For the love of @LSUjesus please stop wearing spots. Leopards and Cheetahs are completely different animals from Tigers. All cats are not created equal, so don’t embarrass yourself.
2. Thou Shalt Arrive Early
You can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning. Likewise, you can’t tailgate all day if you don’t arrive until after lunch. Start things off early so you have time to soak in all the fun and memories. If you want to score a good spot- you’ll have to get there even earlier than just the morning- for big games, people stake their claims on Friday evenings.
3. Thou Shalt Bring a Feast
Forget snacks; at an LSU tailgate, we’re talking full-on feasts. It’s not just about burgers and hot dogs—think jambalaya, gumbo, and boudin balls. The more elaborate and flavorful your spread, the better. Remember, a cauldron of jambalaya is not just a showpiece; it’s a necessity.
4. Thou Shalt Never Run Out of Booze
LSU tailgates are famous for their libations. Ensure that your coolers are stocked with a variety of drinks, from ice-cold beer to brown liquor. And for those keeping score, LSU is also the reigning Jello Shot National Champion, so make sure you’re prepared to uphold that honor. If you’re new to tailgating, or just old, make sure you pace yourself and drink plenty of water.
5. Thou Shalt Deck Thyself in Purple and Gold
Your attire is as important as the food and drink. Show your LSU pride by sporting your best purple and gold gear. The more over-the-top your outfit, the better. Kim Mulkey sparkles, face paint, and elaborate costumes are all part of the fun. This isn’t just a tailgate; it’s a full-on celebration of LSU spirit. Geaux wild!
6. Thou Shalt Play Music Loudly
A good tailgate has a soundtrack, and at LSU, that means blasting tunes that get everyone in the mood. Whether you’re rocking out to the Tiger Band’s classics or Setting it Off with Boosie, the perfect playlist should build the energy. And no tailgate would be complete without playing a round of Thunderstruck!
7. Thou Shalt Embrace the Traditions
Every LSU tailgate has its rituals. Embrace the traditions- visit Mike the Tiger, get some ice cream from the Dairy Store, and definitely don’t miss the Golden Band from Tigerland, cheerleaders, Golden Girls, and the team march down Victory Hill! LSU athletics puts out a Gameday Guide for each home game so that you don’t miss anything!
8. Thou Shalt Tailgate Rain or Shine
LSU tailgating isn’t for the faint of heart. Whether it’s blazing hot or pouring rain, true Tigers don’t let a little weather dampen their spirits. Bring a tent for shade or shelter and embrace the elements with the same enthusiasm you bring to the game. And just be warned, no matter what the weather actually is- it never rains in Tiger Stadium.
9. Thou Shalt Keep the Party Going
Tailgating isn’t just about eating and drinking; it’s a full-day event. Keep the energy high with games like cornhole and beer pong; dance along to the Cupid Shuffle and Footloose; make some new friends! The party doesn’t end until the last fan heads into the stadium. If you’re heading to the game, make sure you’re ready to transition from tailgating mode to full-on cheering mode. Don’t even think about leaving until the game clock hits 0:00 and you have no voice left!
10. Thou Shalt Be a True Tiger
Above all, embody the spirit of LSU in everything you do. Love Purple, Live Gold. Tailgating is about celebrating the Tigers, enjoying time with fellow fans, and creating unforgettable memories. Bring your A-game, show your pride, and make every tailgate a living testament to what it means to be Forever LSU.
