LSU will pay a price for the aftermath of Saturday’s dramatic win over Ole Miss.
Without leading in regulation, the Tigers rallied to force overtime with a game-tying touchdown and extra point during the closing minute. After limiting Ole Miss to a field goal, Kyren Lacy scored a 25-yard touchdown on their first play to give LSU a 29-26 victory.
Following the final whistle, fans stormed the Tiger Stadium field. The SEC announced the ensuing penalty on Sunday.
LSU must pay $250,000 to Ole Miss for the school’s second violation of the league’s access to competition area policy revised last year. The last offense occurred when the men’s basketball team defeated Kentucky in 2023.
LSU will be fined $500,000 for the next violation and each ensuing offense. Before updating the guidelines, the SEC also docked the university $250,000 when fans stormed the field after defeating Ole Miss two years ago.
Meanwhile, Ole Miss was penalized when fans stormed the field in Oxford after the Rebels pulled off a 55-49 win over Jayden Daniels’ Tigers last year.
Some fans may scoff at LSU storming the field after defeating a program that hasn’t captured an SEC football title in 60 years. Yet defeating Ole Miss was vital to a team that opened the season with a non-conference loss to USC.
On Saturday, Garrett Nussmeier led LSU to a monumental win with 337 passing yards and three touchdowns. The Tigers jumped five spots to No. 8 in the latest AP poll.
LSU remains in the College Football Playoff hunt ahead of consecutive road matchups at Arkansas and Texas Tech. The school might have to pay $500,000 if the Tigers win their next home game against Alabama.
