THE VAN BUREN BOYS
LSU is going to have to replace Garrett Nussmeier at the end of the 2025 season and they might have found their answer via the transfer portal.
Former Mississippi State quarterback Michael Van Buren announced that he will be transferring to LSU. Van Buren was initially committed to Oregon before switching to Mississippi State to play for Jeff Lebby. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.
A low four-star prospect coming out of high school, Van Buren started eight games for the Bulldogs this season and threw for 1,886 yards and accounted 16 total touchdowns versus seven interceptions while completing 55 percent of his passes. His most impressive outing came on the road against Georgia when he threw 306 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-31 loss; he threw a season-best 309 yards against Arkansas and threw for 280 in the Egg Bowl.
Taking Van Buren is an interesting and potentially really smart addition by the coaching staff. Again, the staff needs to plan for life without Garrett Nussmeier so they went out and added a young but experienced quarterback who can develop behind Nuss and compete with Colin Hurley to be the starter in 2026. It also allows me to use Seinfeld references for the next couple of seasons.
LSU has added five players out of the portal since Friday. They are:
- Bauer Sharp, TE, Oklahoma
- Ja’Keem Jackson, CB, Florida
- Barion Brown, WR, Kentucky
- Jimari Butler, DE, Nebraska
- Michael Van Buren, QB, Mississippi State
