H-Town to Bean Town
Late Wednesday evening news broke that former LSU great/MLB free agent Alex Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox.
Bregman was the last major free agent in this year’s cycle to sign with a team. His deal includes two opt-outs and deferred money. In addition to Boston and Houston, Bregman was also being courted by the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, and Toronto Blue Jays.
Bregman was actually drafted by the Red Sox coming out of high school, but he of course spurned the Sox then and enrolled at LSU.
Bregman would go on to be picked second overall by Houston and had an excellent career with the Astros. He won two World Series with the Astros, made two All-Star teams, and won his first Gold Glove this past season. For his career, Bregman has a .272 average, 191 home runs, and 663 RBI.
Historically speaking, Fenway Park has been very kind to Bregman. In 21 games, Bregman has a .375 average, seven home runs, 15 RBI, and a 1.240 OPS.
Pitchers and catchers across the MLB have already reported to Spring Training, while full-team workouts begin early next week. Bregman will face his former team on August 1-3 and then return to Houston on August 11-13.
