LSU ain’t messing around this offseason
LSU must’ve heard us talking about them not having money and/or understanding how to properly use the transfer portal to heart because Brian Kelly and his staff are recruiting their asses off.
On Tuesday LSU added a pair of wide receivers out of the transfer portal to up their haul to nine. The Tigers added Destyn Hill from Florida State and Nic Anderson who will be transferring in from Oklahoma.
Hill’s college career has been interesting to say the least. Hill signed with Florida State in 2021 but for whatever reason didn’t actually enroll until 2023, meaning he was a 21-year-old freshman last year. In that 2023 season, Hill played in 10 games last year, started two, while catching six passes for 87 yards. He was expected to take on a larger role this season, but suffered a leg injury of some kind—Florida State never specified the extent of the injury—this past spring and missed the entirety of the 2024 season. Hill is originally from New Orleans and was high school teammates with Aaron Anderson at Edna Karr, and now the Louisiana native is on his way back home.
Nic Anderson is, so far at least, the most impactful player LSU’s added out of the transfer portal. He is viewed as the No. 10 overall player that was available in the portal per 247. Anderson exploded onto the scene in 2023, setting an Oklahoma freshman record with 10 touchdown catches. He caught 31 passes that season, and made the most of them as he averaged 21 yards a catch. Anderson missed essentially all of 2024 because of a tear in his quad. He missed the first three games of this season, played a few snaps in Week 4 against Tennessee game, but aggravated the injury and didn’t see the field again.
Listed at 6’4”, 220 pounds, Anderson ought to be the true No. 1 wide receiver provided he’s healthy. A starting wide receiver trio of Nic Anderson, Barion Brown, and Aaron Anderson working out of the slot could be a really, really good group for Garrett Nussmeier in 2025.
LSU has added a total of three wide receivers out of the transfer portal. They’ve also added two corners (Ja’Keem Jackson and Mansoor Delane), two defensive ends (Jack Pybrun and Jimari Butler), a tight end (Bauer Sharp) and a quarterback (Michael Van Buren). It’s a good haul, in fact it’s ranked as the No. 2 class in the country behind Ole Miss, but I’d like to see Kelly and staff add a couple of offensive linemen, another tight end, a safety, and maybe a defensive tackle or two. And considering how aggressive the staff has been in the portal, I’d expect them to keep on shopping.
