How to enjoy Saturday’s college football, because boy is there a lot of it.
Under Center Shift
- Nebraska-Indiana: That’s right, batting leadoff for the college football Saturday is none other than the Indiana Football Hoosiers. You’ve probably heard about the best Crimson team in college football, but Nebraska is having a quiet good year under true freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola, leading the Cornhuskers to a 5-1 record. The center likely won’t hold for either team, and I tend to think Raiola is in for some freshman learning lessons here but it should be a good game between two overachieving teams.
- Miami-llvll: Cam Ward has the goods, but it’s been a little sketchy for the Hurricanes in a few spots. Will they be able to handle a good-ish Louisville team on the road? I’d say it feels like a trap game but it’s honestly the third or fourth one you could say Miami has played.
- Auburn-Missouri: Auburn has to win this game. Has to. At the same time, Mizzou cannot lose this game. Can not.
- South Carolina-Oklahoma: South Carolina may in fact be the best .500 team in college football this season, and at some point their luck will have to flip for them. I think Oklahoma is the better team from a talent perspective, but the quarterback uncertainty the Sooners are experiencing could be the Gamecocks’ chance to put a quality pelt on the wall that they’ve been searching for.
Third Saturday Shift
- Alabama-Tennessee: Either the book may in fact be out on Tennessee’s offense or Nico isn’t quite ready for the spotlight. At either rate, I think this game will come down to the better offense and at this point in time, that’s Alabama.
- Michigan-Illinois: Remember how I said Nebraska had a 5-1 record? Meet the ones behind the 1. I’m not going to lie to you and say that Illinois is a good team, getting dropped by Penn State and narrowly surviving Purdue prove that not to be the case. But they are more game than the usual Illini team and could give Michigan fits. First team to 24 wins.
- Notre Dame-Georgia Tech: In a twist of excellent timing, this game will be played in Mercedes Benz Stadium instead of Historic Bobby Dodd Stadium at Grant Field. Notre Dame will probably win a sleepy game, but given how they lost to NIU earlier in the year, we need to see the body drop to confirm.
- Colorado-Arizona: It’s Colorado. You know the deal.
Boots and Fence Posts Shift
- LSU-Arkansas: DAS BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT
- Georgia-Texas: It’s a helmet game that really doesn’t need any introduction. You know the deal. Get the second screens out.
- South Dakota State-North Dakota State: One of the biggest games of the FBS regular season is married with the biggest game of the FCS season, the Dakota Marker Trophy. Excluding Sam Houston State’s COVID Year Victory, this game features the only two FCS national champions dating back to 2016 when JMU won. Watch. This. Game. Break out the third screen if needed.
- Kentucky-Florida: It’s not an Anxiety Bowl because I don’t know if Mark Stoops gets fired for losing, but it is a Very Uncomfortable Game. Billy is absolutely getting the axe if he can’t break Florida’s losing streak though.
Robert Kekauala Memorial Shift
- UNLV-Oregon State: This has potential to be a hell of a game to fall asleep to between two lowkey fun teams. I defy to watch the Go-Go Offense operate and feel sleepy.
- TCU-Utah: I would say this could also be a good game, but who the hell knows A) if Cam Rising will play, and B) what Cam Rising we will get if he does. And even still, I don’t trust the Horned Frogs as far as I can throw one, which I’m now realizing is a bad analogy because I could probably throw a frog pretty far. Sound off in the comments how far you think you could throw a frog.
