You’ll hear many people tell you this weekend schedule “sucks”. They are the ones who suck.
Chicken & Waffles Shift
- LSU-South Carolina: Brian Kelly, I beg you don’t lose this game. I wouldn’t even allow this game to be close late.
- Memphis-Florida State: Mike Norvell, I beg you don’t lose this game. I wouldn’t even allow the game to be close late.
- North Texas-Texas Tech: There will be points. Neither school is particularly fond of or good at the “defense” fad. It’s also a homecoming game for Mean Green head coach Eric Morris, who was a Leach player and a Kingsbury disciple.
- Alabama-Wisconsin: This will be a bloodletting in all likelihood, but Alabama struggling with USF last week *again* gives me cause for concern to at least confirm.
Backyard Brawl(s) Shift
- Texas A&M-Florida: Mike Elko’s first road SEC game and a non-zero chance it’s Billy Napier’s last. Florida seems to be expecting to play both DJ Lagway and Graham Mertz, which is historically a great decision.
- West Virginia-Pitt: Backyard Brawl. Enough said.
- App State-ECU: East Carolina takes on West Carolina in what should be a great matchup. After getting uncharacteristically mudholed by Clemson last week the Mountaineers are looking to get back on track against a sneakily ascendent ECU team that has no love lost for App.
- Washington-Washington State: The post-PAC 12 Apple Cup is but one of several interesting local rivalries happening during this shift (post-PAC 12 Civil War & Notre Dame-Purdue) but it’s shaping up to be the most interesting. The game is being played in Seattle, but not in Husky Stadium and Wazzu grads can pack out the stadium. Keep an eye on the affairs in Indiana, though.
Sleeper Saturday Shift
- Colorado-Colorado State: Legally mandated Colorado inclusion, but for a good reason: last year the Buffs just barely survived this game before the wheels came off their season and this game had tons of heat behind it. This year I see little reason why it would be any different.
- Indiana-UCLA: Lot of sneaky good games in this shift, and this is one of them. SP+ is calling this a virtual toss-up, giving the edge to UCLA by less than a field goal.
- UCF-TCU: Gus Malzahn and Sonny Dykes offenses having it out, what’s not to like about this matchup?
- Rice-Houston: Rice got absolutely punked to start the season by Sam Houston State but rebounded in a get right game against Texas Southern. Meanwhile Houston got punked against UNLV and lost a tough one to Oklahoma by four points. We’ll learn a lot about both teams in a few different ways.
Robert Kekaula Memorial Shift
- San Diego State-Cal: Old PAC 12 member takes on an incoming PAC 12 member. Cal should win, but I wouldn’t rule out the Aztecs being game.
- New Mexico State-Fresno State: It’s football.
