Welcome to college football Saturday
Kickoff Shift
- Clemson-Georgia: It’s a helmet game for sure, but Georgia should roll in this one, probably by multiple scores. This is really batting leadoff because it’s week one and I’m sure the energy in the dome will be rocking, so it’ll be a great way to start the first full college football Saturday of the season.
- Penn State-West Virginia: When it grows apparent that Georgia is inevitable, go ahead and flip to this one. I think Penn State should have the edge in this game, but I’ve learned not to expect too much from Penn State and it’s not like Mountaineer Field is an easy place to grab a dub from.
- UConn-Maryland: Look man, the slate being spread out across five days kinda makes the nooner shift a little thin.
- South Dakota State-Oklahoma State: Oklahoma State has history with getting out to slow starts to the season and struggling with August and September buy games. South Dakota State is the two-time reigning FCS national champion having dethroned rivals North Dakota State. Add water for results.
Sweat, Regular and Corn Shift
- Miami (FL)-Florida: Two teams who hate each other and have some serious anxieties about their current situation with a ton of unknowns on every side of the ball open the season against each other in Gainesville. Let’s play the game at 2:30 on August 31. What could go wrong?
- Boise-Georgia Southern: The G5 Super Bowl of The Week sees Boise State come down from the Midwest to Statesboro at 2:30. I’m sure that won’t factor into anything at all, it’ll be fine.
- UTEP-Nebraska: No real drama here, just check in to see what true freshman phenom Dylan Raiola looks like.
- North Texas-South Alabama: Here’s going to be your lowkey banger of the week, bet the farm on it. North Texas has historically struggled with “defense” as a concept and we know what a Major Applewhite offense can and wants to do. On the flip, Eric Morris is in year two of his Mean Green build and the former Leach player and disciple has proven he can draw em up, and we know what a Major Applewhite defense cannot and will not do.
Texas Debutant Shift
- Notre Dame-Texas A&M: The best thing I can say about this game is I don’t know what to expect. Notre Dame’s whole offensive line died in a fiery plane crash (don’t fact check that) and Connor Weigmen has gotten a weird amount of hype ahead of Mike Elko’s A&M debut. Let’s find out together.
- UNLV-Houston: UNLV’s go-go offense. Willie Fritz’s first game in the Bayou City. Nothing else needs to be said.
- Southern Miss-Kentucky: It’s not all peaches and cream in Lexington, even with Cal out of the picture…I’m not saying, I’m just saying.
- Nicholls-Louisiana Tech: [insert eye emojis here]
Robert Kekaula Memorial Shift
- New Mexico-Arizona: Thanks to Arizona law having a statute that dictates when football games before a certain date can kick off, expect both of these schools to be mainstays in this shift for a while. Arizona should win in Brent Brennan’s debut, but the Lobos’ Devon Dampier is worth the price of admission.
- Wyoming-Arizona State: Craig Bohl is never an easy out and while ASU may be on the upswing, they’re not far enough to where I’m comfortable assuming anything at this point, least of all against Wyoming.
- Weber State-Washington: It’s football.
