On Tuesday, former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron made a surprise visit to South Bend to watch Notre Dame’s spring practice under new program leader Marcus Freeman.
Orgeron has long been an admirer of Freeman — even attempting to hire him as LSU’s defensive coordinator prior to the 2021 season.
Clearly, Coach O feels the Fighting Irish program is in good hands as it heads into the first season of the Marcus Freeman coaching era.
Addressing the team after today’s practice, Orgeron revealed his expectations for the program moving forward.
“What a tremendous, tremendous university you have here,” he said. “What a great coach and what a great coaching staff you have. Some of the best players in the country are right here in this room.
“I don’t know when it’s going to happen, but with this staff and this team, you’re gonna win it all.”

“Phenomenal,” Orgeron added after the practice, per NDInsider. “Energy, the way they got after it, the way he had energy on the sideline. That’s just the way I like to coach. When I met [Freeman], he just had something about him: character, class. You could tell he was going to be a championship coach. I think he has all the makings of being a great coach.”
Coach O was let go by LSU after the 2021 season, despite leading the Tigers to a National Championship in 2019. Interestingly enough, it was former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly who replaced Coach O in Baton Rouge ahead of the 2022 season.
The Fighting Irish will kickoff their upcoming campaign with a big-time season opener against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
