Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark have been inextricably linked since their battle in the championship game of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
Reese’s LSU Tigers beat Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes 102-85, with the star forward scoring 15 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. After the game, it wasn’t Reese’s play that stole the headlines. Rather, it was her taunting of Clark that ignited the rivalry and spawned endless talking points for sports debate shows and online fans.
In a new interview with WSJ Magazine, Reese admitted that her “can’t see me” and ring gestures toward Clark changed her life moving forward.
“My life literally just changed from that game,” she said.
While not everything that came from that moment was beneficial to either player, Reese said she thinks it might have been a good thing for women’s hoops in general.
“It’s just a full-circle moment of how women are viewed when it comes to trash-talking,” Reese said. “It’s OK in men’s sports. We’re going to normalize that in women’s sports as well. So it’s just super-competitive. I think we’re two great competitors.”
Reese and Clark continued their rivalry in the professional ranks, with both impressing in their rookie seasons in the WNBA with the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever.
“We brought a lot of fans to this league,” Reese said. “And I think we’re going to continue to do that. And one day, hopefully, we’ll be teammates.”
Reese and Clark actually did play together in this year’s WNBA All-Star Game, but if they ever suited up for the same franchise, the internet might break.
